They may not be flashy like metallic midis or luxe like velvet boots, but button-down shirts are the unsung heroes of our wardrobe. Think about it: What else works as well with ripped jeans as it does with a pencil skirt? Can go from office to brunch in a snap? This season, shirting is finally getting its due, with refreshed takes on the classic silhouette. Any kind of contrast detail, exaggerated sleeve, or colorful buttons will do the trick.
Going through my wardrobe I realized that I actually didn’t have a crisp white button down shirt. GASP, I know! I think it’s because for some reason I always associated that item of clothing with not only men but with the working man. I watched my father leave the house every morning wearing on and it took a while for it to catch up with me that a structured white button down could be one of the sexiest things a women could wear. I am OBSESSED with this one from Zara. It has this amazing metallic detailing that not only gives it some edge but it is the perfect piece to add to the rotation this holiday season.
Pairing an over-sized top with a more slimming bottom is always a great way to off-set a top half that may overwhelm the body. The modern flare adds a graceful, curved silhouette that can accentuate the lower part of your figure. The flare also adds length to your legs because it doesn’t cut off your natural lines by stopping at the ankles as skinny jeans do. If you get the exact hem length right and the break of the flare is smooth, your legs will look a mile long. Skinny jeans have remained a staple in every girl’s closet so long because they are so easy to style—the look is almost impossible to mess up. While flared jeans aren’t as easy to wear—they almost always require heels to fit properly—this added height is also what makes the denim trend super slimming and undoubtedly flattering.
Can we also take a moment to admire the beautiful interior of The Press Hotel where we shot this post!? I felt like every corner I turned around was a unique and stunning backdrop for a photo! The Press Hotel is Portland’s first boutique style hotel and what makes it so cool is that it is located in the former Portland Press Herald building. With vintage touches and newspaper themes strewn throughout the building you are sure to feel as though you have taken a step back in time to when people still read the newspaper. Jk jk it actually made me want to subscribe to my local newspaper, ironically The Portland Press Herald.
